Who we are
Better Tomorrow Films LLC, doing business as Strange Victory Labs ("we", "us"), operates the Juicy Melons app and juicymelons.co. This policy explains what we collect, why, how long we keep it, who receives it, and the choices you have.
Scanning a melon
When you scan, your photo is sent over an encrypted connection to our server and on to OpenAI, whose AI analyses it and returns the score. Starting with version 1.2.9, the app tells you this before your first scan. Unless you choose to share photos (below), we do not keep the photo: our server keeps only a short digital fingerprint (a hash) of it, to prevent abuse. OpenAI processes photos under its API data terms. Photos of melons you save stay on your device.
Sharing your scan photos (optional, from app version 1.2.9)
You can choose to let us keep your melon photos to improve Juicy Melons. The app asks once, after your first scored scan, and you can change your answer at any time in Settings. It is off unless you turn it on. Scanning, rating and every paid feature work the same either way.
While sharing is on:
- What we keep: a copy of the photo from each scan that produces a score (not from failed or rejected scans). We shrink it and remove location and other camera data. We store it with that scan's scores and, if you rate the melon, your rating. It is linked to your app's anonymous ID and Support ID, and to the version of this notice you agreed to. Nothing in it identifies you by name or account.
- Why: to test, improve and train how Juicy Melons scores watermelons. For example:
- re-scoring photos with new versions of our scoring to check they are more accurate;
- checking that the AI's behaviour hasn't changed;
- noting visible features (such as the field spot) to measure accuracy;
- training or tuning a scoring model.
- Who processes it:
- the photo is held briefly on our server (Hetzner) and then stored in private, non-public storage at Cloudflare (R2);
- when we re-score photos, or train or tune a model, they are sent to OpenAI. If we use a different provider for this, we will name it here before doing so;
- people who work for us, including contractors bound by confidentiality, may view photos to label them, only for these purposes.
We never sell shared photos, never use them for advertising, and never publish them.
- How long: until you delete them. There is no automatic expiry.
- Changing your mind: turning sharing off in Settings deletes every photo you have shared. Wipe All Data does too.
Please don't scan photos that show people while sharing is on. If one does, tell us and we will delete it.
Scan records and scores
Each scan sends our server some technical information:
- your platform and app version;
- a security check from Apple (App Attest) or Google (Play Integrity), which confirms the request comes from the genuine app;
- your app's Support ID (an anonymous id from our purchase provider);
- your app language.
For every scan we record the time, platform, app version, a hashed device key and the photo's hash, together with the AI's result (its overall and category scores). We use these records to run the service, count free scans, prevent abuse, and improve and train our scoring. Our server is hosted by Hetzner Online GmbH. It also logs your IP address, which we keep for 14 days.
Melons you save and rate
When you save a melon, the app automatically stores a copy in our cloud database (Supabase), under a random identifier created on your device. This happens without a separate opt-in. The copy includes:
- the name you give the melon;
- the AI's scores, notes, verdict and confidence;
- the date you saved it.
If you later rate how the melon tasted, your ratings are added. Earlier versions of the app also asked optional taste questions and stored the answers the same way; version 1.2.9 and later no longer ask them. The photo itself is not uploaded from your device.
How long we keep it
We keep scan records, scores, ratings and shared photos until you delete them, or until you ask us to, because they are what we use to improve our scoring. IP addresses in our server logs are kept for 14 days.
Purchases
Apple or Google handle purchases, and RevenueCat manages them. RevenueCat receives your purchase details and your Support ID. On iPhone, RevenueCat also receives an Apple Search Ads attribution token, which tells us whether an install came from an ad.
Analytics, crash reports and advertising
- We use Google Firebase Analytics to understand how the app is used: for example screens viewed, scans, scores, purchases, ratings and your photo-sharing choice. It also gives approximate location derived from your IP address.
- We use Firebase Crashlytics to receive crash and error reports.
- Both use identifiers for your app installation.
- We use the Meta (Facebook) SDK to measure our advertising. It receives app events such as installs, scans and purchases, including the price. Meta never receives your photos.
- On iPhone, Meta receives your device's advertising identifier only if you allow tracking when the app asks. You can change this at any time in Settings › Privacy & Security › Tracking.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, the app schedules a reminder on your device to rate a melon you saved. We do not send push notifications.
Our website
juicymelons.co is hosted by Cloudflare, which processes your IP address to deliver the site. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which does not use cookies, to see how the site is visited.
Who receives data
- OpenAI (analysis of scanned photos; re-scoring and model training with photos you choose to share)
- Cloudflare (storage of shared photos; website hosting and analytics)
- Hetzner (our scan server)
- Supabase (cloud storage of saved melons and ratings)
- RevenueCat (purchases)
- Google (Firebase Analytics, Crashlytics, Play Integrity on Android)
- Meta (advertising measurement; no photos)
- Apple (App Attest, Search Ads attribution)
- Contractors who label photos for us, under confidentiality
We do not sell your personal information.
What you can delete yourself
- Turn off photo sharing (Settings): deletes every photo you have shared.
- Delete a melon in My Melons: removes it from your device, plus its cloud copy, rating and shared photo.
- Wipe All Data (Settings): removes everything on your device, plus your saved melons and ratings in our cloud database and every photo you have shared. If your phone is offline, the app finishes the photo deletion the next time it connects.
- Wipe All Data does not delete:
- our scan records and the scores recorded with them;
- our server logs;
- analytics and crash reports held by Google;
- advertising events held by Meta;
- purchase records held by Apple, Google and RevenueCat.
How to ask us to delete
Email [email protected] with "Delete my data" in the subject.
- Include your Support ID (Settings › Support, in version 1.2.9 and later).
- We will delete the scan records, scores, shared photos and saved melons we can link to it, and tell you what the providers above hold and how to ask them.
- If you don't have a Support ID (for example after reinstalling, or on an earlier version), tell us your device model and roughly when you used the app. We will try to find your records, and tell you if we can't.
Children
Juicy Melons is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
We will update this page and its date when our practices change. If we want to use shared photos for a purpose not described here, we will ask you again first.
